Montenegro, decision on Nato referendum after elections

Opposition insists on direct vote on the matter

21 June, 14:43
(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Whether Montenegro's Nato adhesion will be decided through a referendum or not will be decided after the autumn elections, Miodrag Vukovic of the ruling Democratic party of Socialists (Dps) said, as reported by the Montenegrin public broadcaster, Rtcg.

"We will not vote for the resoulution proposed by the Socialist People's Party (Snp)", Vukovic added. This Monday, Snp presented to the Parliament a resolution that envisions a Nato referendum. A part of the opposition is of opinion that such an important geo-political decision should be decided directly by the people, but the ruling party has been pushing against the referendum so far.

However, Vukovic insists that he is "certain that the citizens would vote in favour of the adhesion in case of referendum". (ANSA).
