(ANSA) - KRAKOW - ''Europe has deep Christian roots, if we cut
these roots, the tree will die'', the Archbishop of Krakow,
cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, said meeting with journalists from
many European countries ahead of World Youth Day, scheduled for
next July.
''We are fighting - Dziwisz added - to safeguard moral values
and Christian roots, the foundation of Europe. We must be able
to protect ourselves from destructive tendencies, even if Europe
accuses us of being destructive''. Referring to the current
political situation in Poland, Dziwisz underlined that even if
there are problems, the Roman Catholic Church is not facing a
crisis.
''There are differences between north and south, for example in
terms of Mass attendance. We are concerned about the demographic
decline, which is not due to poverty, but to the way of
thinking'', he added. ''The Government supports population
growth, for instance through the subsidy programme for families
expecting second child. The WYD - he continued - is expected to
simulate youth with regard to moral and religious values, both
in Poland and in Europe''. As for European concerns about some
policies developed by the Polish government, Dziwisz underlined
that ''this is a free and sovereign country, that safeguards its
freedom both in terms of ethics and politics''. (ANSA).
