Poland abolishes anti-racism council

Ombudsman:'shameful'. Government: 'inefficient body'

05 May, 20:01

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 05 MAG - The Poland's right-wing government abolished the Anti-racism council - a body introduced three years ago by the former administration. The decision caused negative reactions from the opposition and from the human rights ombudsman Adam Bodnar. "It is shameful.

The council is absolutely necessary considering the growing number of racially motivated attacks and the increase of xenofobia", Bodnar told the Afp. For the governing party, Law and Justice, the motivation behind the abolishment is of practical nature.

"The council proved to be rather inefficient", said the government spokesperson, Rafal Bochenek, adding that the responsibilities of the body would pass to other institutions. (ANSA).
