(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 27 - Hellenic Supreme Court president Vassiliki Thanou on Thursday was nominated prime minister of the interim government that will guide the country until elections, the Greek president's office said. She is the first woman to be appointed prime minister in the history of modern Greece.

Thanou will be sworn in Thursday evening, a release from the president's office said. Her appointment follows failed attempts to form a new government by Vangelis Meimarakis and Panagiotis Lafazanis, leaders from Nea Dimokratia (New Democracy) and Popular Unity, respectively.

At the same time, an invitation to meet at the president's office for one last attempt to form a national unity government was refused by outgoing prime minister Alexis Tsipras; president of Communist party KKE Dimitris Koutsoubas, leader of Independent Greeks Panos Kammenos, and leader of Golden Dawn Nikolaos Michaloliakos.(ANSA).
