Hahn, Montenegro should strenghten rule of law and press freedom

16 April, 11:11
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - On April 21, the Prime Ministers of six Western Balkan countries aspiring to join the EU will meet in Brussels to discuss regional cooperation in transport and energy sectors. This was announced by European Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn, after his meeting in Brussels with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Dukanovic.

''We agreed that the production of energy is an increasingly important issue in this region'' Hahn said, underlining that particularly in the sector of renewable energy there is ''great potential'' in the area, which includes Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Former Republic of Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro.

After the bilateral meeting, Hahn also took stock of the situation in Montenegro, which officially applied for EU membership. ''The accession negotiations are underway, but some crucial challenges remain'', Hahn commented on Twitter, explaining that ''we need to make serious efforts to establish the rule of law, and to strenghten press freedom and economic reforms''.
