Merkel, youth unemployment in Europe remains too high

Crisis under control, but not yet overcome

18 December, 12:52

(ANSA) - BERLIN - ''Youth unemployment in Europe remains too high'', according to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who spoke in the Bundestag ahead of today's EU summit. ''The current economic crisis is under control - Merkel said - but we have not completely overcome it yet. It's up to companies to create jobs'', then we first need to ''mobilize private investment''.

Speaking about European policy, the chancellor said that ''going back to spheres of influence and a fragmented Europe would not only be a step backwards for Ukraine, but also for the security in the whole Europe. We can not allow it and we'll not allow it''. Then Merkel insisted on ''the importance of a long lasting truce'', in Ukraine and the ''strengthening of humanitarian aid to eastern countries, in a dialogue with Moscow, in all the areas controlled by separatista''. Quoting the phone call with Putin, Poroshenko and Hollande, in which the four leaders agreed on this, Merkel underlined that ''Russia is going to accept our offer for a dialogue on the basis of the 'peaceful order' which is in force in Europe; sanctions will not stop, until that goal is achieved''.
