(ANSA) - PRAGUE - Vera Jourova, member of the Ano movement (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) and Minister for Regional Development, is the Czech Republic's candidate to the European Commission, the Czech news agency CTK reported.

Jourova, 50 yo, entered politics at the regional level in 2003, as a member of the Social Democratic Party (CSSD). In 2006 she spent a month in custody due to an allegation of corruption, but she was then absolved.

Jourova has been since 2012 a member of the populist movement Ano, founded by Andrej Babis, businessman, billionaire and winner of the recent European elections.

After the general elections last October, Jourova was appointed Minister for Regional Development. Jourova studied literature and law at Charles University in Prague. She speaks English, Russian and Romanian. (ANSA).
