Expo:Ferrara, agro-fishing districts

Nine examples compared in Ragusa

(ANSA) - PALERMO, JULY 3 - "These districts are the backbone of Sicilian economy and we recognise their value because our agricoltural products of excellence are appreciated in the whole world.

Therefore, 'help us to help you' project these efforts beyond Expo, is the greatest challenge we are to face at the end of the universal exhibition of Milan" said Alessandro Ferrara, director general of the regional authority for Productive Activities, during the workshop "Towards Expo" organised in Ragusa by the nine agricultural and fishing districts of Sicily.

Dario Tornabene, manager of the Innovation and Research office of the authority overseeing the nine districts of citruse, poultry, beef meat, cereal, sweets, prickly pear, fishing, horticoltural and dairy, accompanied Ferrara. With one-thousand five-hundred companies (single and aggregated ones) and almost 1.5 five billion of turnover, this was the only growing sector in Sicily in 2014 (source Bankitalia Report, June 2015) together with tourism.

"These structures must be made more agile and integrated - added Tornabene - but there is no doubt that the fragile economy of our country is still afloat thanks to structures such as these, both in Sicily and in the rest of Italy".

These are positive examples analysed in neighbouring countries as Giovanni Tumbiolo, president of the Fishing District, stressed mentioning the Blue Sea Land experience, an event which takes place every year, during the month of October, in Mazara del Vallo, attended by institutional representatives from the fishing world coming from dozens of Mediterranean countries.

"Every year foreign delegations come to study the model of Sicilian districts - he said - these districts are a real asset for these territories. They are tied to local identity and custom but in order to operate they need ideas and cooperation both between districts and with institutions, research entities, universities and professional associations".
