(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JULY 15 - The completion of transport
infrastructure on both sides of the Adriatic Sea is ''a
precondition for us to achieve the objectives of sustainable
development within the Adriatic-Ionian macro-region'', according
to a guideline approved today by the Environment Committee of
the European Parliament. ''There is no chance to build the
macro-region in the absence of a transport infrastructure: the
completion of the Adriatic-Ionian 'backbone', from Ravenna to
Brindisi, and its inclusion in the European corridors connecting
the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea are a critical step in the
implementation of the macro-region'', said deputy head of
delegation, Massimo Paolucci (Democratic Party). ''We do believe
that this strategy will be an important tool to achieve the
goals of environmental protection and sustainable fisheries'',
added Renata Briano (Democratic Party). According to her
colleague Damiano Zoffoli (DP), the macro-region should also
focus on the problems of erosion. ''We need to enhance our
knowledge of these geological phenomena, evaluate the risk of
marine water ingression along the Adriatic coast, identify
effective actions to fight erosion'', the MEP stated. The
opinion approved by the Environment Committee will now be
forwarded to regional development committee. (ANSA).
