Romania: Nuclearelectrica needs up to 3.5 bn for new reactor

State guarantees essential for the project

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, FEBRUARY 18 - Romanian state nuclear company Nuclearelectrica needs between 3.0 and 3.5 billion euro to develop a third nuclear reactor at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant using its own resources and bank loans, but it needs state guarantees to make the project viable, the portal Bne Intellinews reported, quoting Theodor Chirica, a member of Nuclearelectrica's board and former CEO of the company.

In 2015 Nuclearelectrica signed a memorandum of understanding with China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) for the construction of two new reactors at Cernavoda, but Romanian former Prime Minister Ludovic Orban announced in January that the government will exit the deal with its Chinese partner, Bne Intellinews recalled. According to Chirica, with an EU or NATO partner, Romania could develop two reactors. (ANSA).
