(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 06 DEC - Austrian and Moldovan law
enforcement authorities, coordinated by Europol, have dismantled
and arrested the members of "an organized crime group suspected
of smuggling nuclear materials," Europol said in statement
today.
The operation "targeted a group of criminals when they
attempted to sell nuclear container which allegedly contained
radiological material to an army for 3 million euro," Europol
said, without providing further details. During the operation
three persons were arrested in Vienna. Two of them had criminal
records, and one of them had been already convicted for a
similar crime in the past, Europol added. A video, posted on the
Europol official website, shows several moments of the
investigation and the intervention of the Austrian police, with
an helicopter, for the arrest of the suspects.
Trafficking in nuclear and radiological materials is "a
potential risk to the EU internal security," Europol noted,
adding that "the likelihood of the illegal movement" of this
type of material "remains due to the increased availability of
misappropriated radiological sources from different conflict
zones and their further trade." (ANSA).
