(ANSA) - BRUXELLES - The European Commission backed nearly 176 million euros to guarantee Romanian citizens a better access to drinking water and a more comprehensive network of transport.

The funding comes from the EU Cohesion Fund and involves mostly the urban areas of Vrancea County, in the Eastern part of the country.

Nearly 100 million euros will fund the construction and restoration of hundreds of kilometers of distribution and sewerage and will allow nearly 66,460 people to access drinking water. Works will end by the end of 2021. "Access to quality water should not be a luxury, but before the Cohesion Policy came into force, many citizens in Romania have experienced this," said the Commissioner for regional policy Corina Creţu.

Moreover, the European project aims to renovate the national road E79, which crosses the country and connects its southern regions to Greece and the northern ones to Hungary. Notably, 76 million euros will fund the renovation of the section between the city of Deva in Transylvania and Oradea, on the border with Hungary. (ANSA).
