Energy: World Bank ranked 111 countries, Italy in top ten

Progress in many areas, not in Sub-saharan Africa

(ANSA) - ROME - Italy is among the top ten countries with the best policies for energy sustainability, according to a World Bank's report, Rise, (Regulatory Indicators for Sustainable Energy), which assesses 111 countries in three areas: access to electricity (on which the 'Bel Paese' gets a score of 100%), energy efficiency (72%) and renewable sources (85%). Canada is ranked first, followed by the United States and the Netherlands with the same score, then Germany and the UK. The list continues with Romania and Italy, which gained the same score as France and the Czech Republic. Italy gets a score of 100 out of 100 for access to energy, as all developed countries; 72 out of 100 for energy efficiency and 85 of 100 for renewable energy. The report shows that a growing number of developing countries - Mexico, China, Turkey, India, Vietnam, Brazil and South Africa - is beginning to be a leader in the field of sustainable energy. But there is still room for improvement across the world, and especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This area is the least electrified region of the planet, with 600 million people who still live without electricity. 40% of the countries surveyed by the World Bank in this area have not yet adopted measures to accelerate access to electricity, compared with 10% of the Asian countries. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are an exception to the rule. (ANSA).
