School: Slovenia the best in former Yugoslavia in PISA test

Bosnia, Macedonia and Kosovo at the bottom of the ranking

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - Slovenia ranked the best, Kosovo the worst in the former-Yugoslavia region in latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 global education test, an initiative of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for evaluating the quality and efficiency of school systems.

The OECD's PISA tested around 600,000 15-year-old students in 79 countries on reading, science and mathematics, with the main focus on reading, the OECD said.

Slovenia ranked 21st in reading (495 points), above the OECD average of 487, and scored 509 points in mathematics (OECD average 489) and 507 in science (OECD average 489). Slovenia is followed by Croatia, 29nd in reading with 479 points. The EU country scored 464 points in mathematics and 472 in science. On the third place in the former Yugoslavia, Serbia, with 439 points in reading (45th place), 448 in mathematics and 440 in science. Montenegro ranked 52nd in reading (421 points) and scored 430 points in mathematics and 415 in science. Even lower the ranking of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 62nd in reading with 403 points. Bosnia scored 406 points in mathematics and 398 points in science, while North Macedonia ranked 67th in reading (393 points), with 394 in mathematics and 413 in science. Almost at the bottom of the PISA ranking, Kosovo (75th), with only 353 points in reading, 366 in mathematics and 365 in science. In relation to reading, Estonia (5th) ranked the best in Central- and Eastern Europe with 523 points, but the country positioned itself near the top also in mathematics (523) and science (530). Excellent results also for Poland (10th, with 512 points in reading, 516 in mathematics, and 511 in science).
