Hungary: population could decline to 7.7 mn in next 50 years

Study, problem caused by emigration and low natality

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOVEMBER 13 - In the most realistic scenario, Hungary's population may go down to around 7.7 million by 2070, according to a new study of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, the portal Hungary Today reported.

In the worst-case scenario, however, Hungary's population could fall to 6 million by 2070, the study revealed.

The Demographic Portrait research shows that demographic decline exceeded 400,000 people between 2001 and 2017, in particular due low birth rates and emigration.

In the best scenario, Hungary Today informed, the population will stabilize at around 9 million, but a more realistic scenario is a 7.75 population by 2070.

The Hungarian government has recently launched a so-called national consultation on family and family subsidies. Hungary spends currently five percent of its GDP on family support schemes, "the highest proportion in Europe", which has resulted in the fertility rate rising from 1.23 to 1.5, Hungary Today said.
