Serbia: study, 22% would leave the country

Majority are young people aged 18-29

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 15 OTT - More than a fifth of the Serbian population, 22% of the total, wish leave the country to find better living standards and jobs abroad, shows a new research produced by the think tank "Srbija 21 - Center for the Serbia of the future", made public today.

The results of the survey show that a huge share of the Serbs willing to emigrate are aged between 18 and 29, 34% of the total surveyed, and that 45% of those thinking to leave the country are planning to stay long-term or forever abroad. Among the main reasons to leave Serbia, respondents mentioned the low living standards (41%), the fact of being willing to be paid more for their job (36%) and the bad situation in the country (9%), local media reported. More than 80% of respondents said that they would be willing to relocate to Western countries, while only 2% indicated Russia as their preferred destination. A huge percentage of the respondents, 90% of the total, said that they see the life of their children abroad. (ANSA).
