(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 28 MAR - Bulgaria could lose between 20% and 25% of its current population by 2040, according to estimates from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, presented to the Bulgarian Council of ministers in Sofia today, the news agency Bta reported.

According to the study, based on estimates of Eurostat, the Bulgarian National Statistical Institute, the UN and the World Bank, the current trend of population decrease will continue in the next decades. Bulgaria may lose between one fifth and one quarter of its population, depending from the projections.

The demographic decline will affect all regions in the country, expect the capital. A substanstial increase of the population over-65 years old is also forecasted. The study will be also presented to the Parliament.

Bulgaria, together with the several other countries in the Balkans and Central- and Eastern Europe, suffers from population decline in particular due to low birth rate and emigration.

According to World Bank data, Bulgaria had 8.9 million inhabitants in 1988, 7.1 million in 2016. (ANSA).
