Kosovo: application for accession to UNESCO postponed

After similar decision over Interpol

05 October, 14:47
(ANSA) - PRISTINA - Kosovo has decided to postpone for now a new application for membership to UNESCO, which is strongly opposed by Serbia. Kosovo's first attempt to join the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization had failed two years ago.

Foreign Ministry said that the 'pragmatic' decision to postpone the membership application was made in full and close cooperation with the United States and other countries of the so-called 'Quint' (USA, Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy). Kosovo's full membership of all major international organizations, beginning with the United Nations and its agencies, remains Kosovo's main goal, the ministry underlined in a statement. Evidently, Kosovo could not count on a sufficient number of votes to join UNESCO.

Kosovo has also decided to withdraw its application for membership of Interpol, because of insufficient support within the General Assembly of the Organization. Belgrade, which does not recognize Pristina's independence, is constantly engaged in an international lobbying action to ensure that the majority of countries do not support Kosovo's aspirations to become part of the major global and regional organizations.
