Romania, head of communist-era secret police Postelnicu dies

(ANSA) – BUCHAREST - Former head of the communist-era secret police 'Securitate' Tudor Postelnicu died aged 86, his wife confirmed on Saturday for television channel Digi24, as Agerpres reports.

According to her, Postelnicu had been in the "Carol Davila" Military Hospital for several weeks with breathing problems.

He was being tried for being complicit in crimes against humanity in the case of the killing of prominent dissident Gheorghe Ursu.

Postelnicu was the head of the State Security Department as of 1978, and beginning 1987 until the 1989 Revolution he was Minister of the Interior. (ANSA).
