(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The "Palatul Primaverii", the building
that was, for 25 years, the luxurious private residence of the
former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and of his wife
Elena, will soon be put up for sale by the government in
Bucharest.
According to Romanian news agency Mediafax, this decision was
made due to the too high costs of maintenance of the villa,
which is rarely used, in particular as accommodation for foreign
heads of state on an official visit, in line with what the
Romanian authorities had established after the democratic
breakthrough in 1989.
According to several media in Bucharest, the interiors of the
Palatul Primaverii, built in the mid-sixties, following
Ceausescu's instructions on a 14 thousand square metre plot,
became very renowned after the fall of Ceausescu, when images of
the luxurious furniture, of the big swimming pool and of the
gold taps in the many bathrooms were disclosed on the national
TV.
Part of the furniture and clothes belonging to the presidential
couple, still hosted in the villa, will be destroyed because
they are in very poor condition, Tv Romania has explained. The
"Conducator" and his wife Elena were executed after a summary
trial, which represented the acme of the Romanian revolution, on
December 25, 1989. (ANSA).
