Slovakia: high mortality of bee colonies in South
Among possible causes, weather and chemicals in agriculture
24 May, 13:57According to local media, among the most affected regions are Bratislava, Pezinok, Komarno, Nitra, Prievidza, Skalica, Sahy, Sala, Topocany, Zeliezovce and other areas in the south of Slovakia, where the mortality of bees has reached a 15-20 percent rate.
Hospodárske Noviny pointed out that the reasons behind the higher death-rate of bees in Slovakia could be connected with recent warm weather without rain, that facilitated the diffusion of some parasites, but also by chemicals used by farmers to kill insects.
Milan Rusnak, of the Slovak Union of Beekeepers, said however that the production of honey is currently not threatened, as the problems are not affecting the whole country. (ANSA).
