Germany: IFO business index falls again

Mood among companies weakens to 97.9 points in May

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 23 - The Ifo Institute index, which measures the optimism among German businesses, has fallen again for the second month in a row.

The Ifo Institute said in a statement on Thursday that the Ifo index fell to 97.9 points in May from 99.2 in April, in particular "due to a considerably worse assessment of the current business situation." "The outlook for the coming months, however, was unchanged," Ifo added, noting that "the German economy is still lacking in momentum." In manufacturing, the business climate index fell slightly, but the expectations rose for the first time since last September, while in construction the business climate index rose for the third time in succession, Ifo said. In the services the index "took a substantial hit", with optimism for the future also declining, and the business climate worsened also in the trade sector. (ANSA).
