(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 04 OTT - The German supermarket chain Lidl will start to be fully operational in Serbia by opening 16 stores in 12 cities on October 11, the company announced.

The discount chain will open its stores first in Belgrade, Bor, Zrenjanin, Kragujevac, Leskovac, Nis, Novi Sad, Smederevo, Sombor, Subotica, Uzice and Sabac. The retail network will be expanded further in the next months. Lidl is planning the launch of a new store in Belgrade, bringing the total number of Lidl supermarkets in the Serbian capital to six, and others in Vrsac, Indija, Jagodina, Kikinda, Krusevac and Pancevo.

Lidl will have 1,500 employees at work when the first stores will be opened. Around 1,500 products will be available on shelfs, the company added. Last June, Lidl opened a logistic center in Nova Pazova, investing 55 million euros. At the openings, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic stated that Lidl is not only a supermarket chain, but a "symbol of progress".

Lidl operates today more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries.
