Ukraine: Patriarch Moscow, 'Zelensky can unite the country'

'And find ways to overcome conflicts and divisions'

23 April, 15:57
(ANSA) - MOSCOW, APR 23 - Moscow Patriarch Kirill sent a message of congratulations to Volodymyr Zelensky on his victory in the Ukrainian presidential election and declared that as head of state he has ''a historic opportunity to unite the nation''. The outgoing president, Petro Poroshenko, was the political supporter of a new Ukrainian Church independent from the Moscow Patriarchate, an attitude that the Russian Orthodox Church, close to the Kremlin, did not appreciate. ''The Ukrainians who supported his candidacy - said Patriarch Kirill, addressing Zelensky - have high hopes for positive changes in their lives.

You have been given a historic opportunity to unite the nation and give a contribution in order to resolve the country's economic and social problems and find ways to overcome existing conflicts and divisions''. (ANSA).
