Remittances: strong growth in Romania in 2017

Inflow rise also in Serbia, BiH and Bulgaria

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - Romania, after Russia and Ukraine, is the third largest remittance recipient in the Europe and Central Asia region (ECA) and registered a significant increase in the inflow between 2016 and 2017, World Bank recent published data show.

According to World Bank estimates, remittances to Romania amounted to 4.9 billion dollars in 2017, up from 3.4 billion dollars in 2016 (+41.5%). Serbia ranked fourth among the largest remittance recipients in the ECA area, with 3.6 billion dollars of remittances received from abroad in 2017, up from 3.2 in 2016. Bulgaria ranked seventh, with 2.2 billion in 2017, up from 1.6 billion in 2016. A significant growth in the inflow of remittances was registered also in Bosnia and Herzegovina, ninth in the ECA region, with 2 billion dollars in 2017, up from 1.8 in 2016.

"After three consecutive years of decline, remittances sent to Europe and Central Asia (ECA) are estimated to rise by 20.9 percent in 2017 compared with 2016," the World Bank said.
