(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 21 MAR - The European Union had close to 182 million hectares of forests in 2015, corresponding to 43% of its land area, Eurostat said on the occasion of the International Day of Forests, today.

Slovenia, with 63% of the land area wooded, was among the EU countries with the highest coverage of forests in Europe, Eurostat said. In 2015, the EU statistical office added, slightly over three quarters of the land area was wooded in Finland and Sweden, followed by Slovenia. Another four EU Member States, Estonia, Latvia, Spain and Portugal, registered shares in the range of 54-56% of total forest and wooded land. "Forests play a significant role in helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Eurostat noted, adding that in 2016 forest land absorbed over 70% of CO2 equivalent in Sweden (74%), over 50% in Finland (56%) and Lithuania (53%), and almost 30% in Slovenia.
