EU19: retail trade volume down 1.1% in December

But 1.9% increase over previous year. Decline even in the EU28

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - Retail trade volume declined by 1.1% in December, after an increase by 2% in November. On the other hand, a 1.9% year-on-year growth was recorded, according to Eurostat. Even in the EU28 the index fell by 1% in the last month of 2017, after an increase by 2.1% in November, whereas a 2.4% year-on-year growth was recorded.

The EU average in 2017, compared to 2016, grew by 2.6% both in the EU-19 and EU-28. The countries where retail trade volume recorded the sharpest decline are Luxembourg (down 6.2%), Ireland (down 2.7%) and Slovenia (down 2.3%), whereas the biggest increases were recorded in Malta (up 3.1%), Estonia (up 1.8%) and Romania (up 1.3%). Italy's figures are confidential.
