Research: Italy and Slovenia together in biomedicine

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, SEPT. 26 - The objective is to promote innovation in biomedicine, dissemination and transfer of research results to industry. In order to achieve this result, for the first time cross-border biomedicine and bio-computing skills will be combined to improve diagnosis and therapy of various pathologies such as heart attack, serious wounds and neuroinflammatory diseases, offer biomedical companies ready-to-use kits and essays so as to enable them to create new biopharmaceutical products.

These are the main assets of the Interreg Italy-Slovenia ''TRAIN'' project, which can rely on a 1mn euro loan, involving 6 partner institutions in Italy and Slovenia. The project will support professionals in the clinical field, students and researchers, patients and healthcare systems, and SMEs.

The companies involved include the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) based in Trieste, project leader, and Josef Stefan Institute, Technology Park Ljubljana, Experteam, BioValley Investments, Postgraduate School of the Josef Stefan Institute. Along with them, two associated partners: Central Health Department of the FVG Region and the The National Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia.

The project was presented today at the ICGEB headquarters and was funded under the Interreg V-A Italy-Slovenia Programme 2014-2020. The ''cross-border'' approach is crucial because only by pooling of complementary skills in the program area it is possible to gain a greater scientific, economic and social impact'', the Serena Zacchigna from ICGEB and Saso Dzeroski from the Josef Stefan Institute underlined. The initiative is also part of the ''shared challenge to address Europe 2020 Strategy for Smart Growth and Smart Specialization Strategies''.(ANSA).
