Climate: Slovakia may lose half of water sources

Potential damages to agriculture over 1 billion

14 February, 12:11
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 14 FEB - Slovakia may lose as much as one half of its water resources due to the climate change by 2075, the local Slovak Spectator reported, quoting a study produced by Greenpeace Slovensko in cooperation with the climatologist Jozef Pecho and the journalist Andrej Bán. By 2075, the damages to agriculture in Slovakia by climate change may also exceed 1 billion euro, the research revealed.

"The impacts of the quick increase in global and regional temperature have already occurred in Slovakia particularly the increase in extreme weather and more visible drought" Pecho said, warning also of possible extreme drought episodes, with the number of hot days increasing fourfold, causing issues with lack of water and related problems in agriculture, but also of frequent floods.
