In Bulgaria, Romania youngest mothers in the EU

First child at around 26 years, in Europe average at 29,1

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 18 MAR - Bulgaria and Romania have the youngest first-time mothers in the European Union, new data from Eurostat show.

The mean age of women in the EU on giving birth to their first child has gradually increased from 28.7 in 2013 to 29.1 in 2017, Eurostat said. However, three Member States registered a mean age much below the EU average: Bulgaria (26.1), Romania (26.5) and Latvia (26.9). In general, a great number of countries in Central- and Eastern Europe see women giving birth to their first child at a relatively young age: in Slovakia the mean age is 27.1, in Poland 27.3, in Lithuania 27.5, in Estonia 27.7, in Hungary 28, in Czechia 28.2, in Croatia 28.6, in Slovenia 28.8. According to Eurostat data, the EU member States with the highest mean ages of women at birth of their first child in 2017 were Italy (31.1 years old), Spain (30.9) and Luxembourg (30.8).(ANSA).
