Fedriga, FVG useful to the EU for relations with the Balkans

On his debut as a member of the EU Committee of the Regions

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 11 - "I believe that the Regions should have a key role in the European decision-making process.

Too often even the national States, along with Regions, have been cut out. Friuli Venezia Giulia can make a useful contribution to the European debate thanks to its privileged relationship with the Balkan area," said the governor of the FVG Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, on the sidelines of his first participation in the plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions.

"We are a strategic region especially for the relationship with non-EU countries in eastern Europe - Fedriga underlined - so I wanted to attend this meeting because I think that collaboration and growth projects throughout the Balkan area can be a tool for stabilization that can start right from the territory." As for possible enlargement of the EU to the Balkans, Fedriga said that "there are no pre-established solutions. We have to observe and assess every single case, therefore if we want the EU to make sense, we cannot make it become a European Union regardless of the different contexts and situations. It should be a Union that looks to citizens and is representative of those citizens, which is something the EU has not been able to do so far." (ANSA).
