(ANSA) - BELGRADE, AUGUST 30 - Serbia will have to exit the
announced agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union on the same
day as the country joins the EU, according to European
Commission sources cited by Belgrade-based media.
"Serbia can make agreements with other states or other
organizations before joining the EU. However, as part of the
accession negotiations, Serbia has committed itself to withdraw
from all bilateral trade agreements on the same day of EU
membership", the Brussels sources said. "If you become part of a
single EU market, you get equal rights but common rules must be
respected."
In a recent meeting with the Russian ambassador in Belgrade,
Aleksandr Botsan-Kharcenko, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic
announced that Serbia and the Eurasian Economic Union would sign
an agreement on October 25.
This deal would guarantee Serbia access to a market of 180
million people. Serbia, which has always had ties of friendship
with Russia, has refused to adopt any sanction against Moscow so
far. (ANSA)
