Serbia: Vucic, we may reintroduce military service

Survey, 74% of respondents support the idea

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 22 AGO - Serbia may reintroduce the compulsory military service in the country, suspended in 2011, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic suggested on Tuesday.

Vucic said that Belgrade is considering to reintroduce the military service for a period between three and six months, starting after 2020.

"We are still thinking about it, it depends from the finances," Vucic said as quoted by local media, adding that no decision has been taken still. Vucic, however, suggested that people could spend from three to six months in the army, adding that serving in the military could be an advantage when applying for jobs in the public sector. A survey made public last June revealed that 74% of the population is in favour of reintroducing the military service in the country. (ANSA).
