Ukraine: diplomatic crisis with Serbia, due to mercenaries

Both countries call back their ambassadors

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - A diplomatic crisis has burst between Serbia and Ukraine due to the participation of Serbian mercenaries in the armed conflict in Donbass, alongside Russians. After Kiev's decision in recent days to call back for consultations its own ambassador to Belgrade Oleksandr Aleksandrovic, Serbia's Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic responded yesterday with a similar measure, calling back home the Serbian ambassador to Ukraine, Rade Bulatovic. Through a statement, the minister underlined Serbia's willingness to continue to have ''good relations with Ukraine based on principles of mutual respect'', adding however that Belgrade ''does not intend to cause any collateral damage to international relationships that have nothing to do with Serbia''. Underlining that Serbian citizens who have participated in armed conflicts abroad, including Ukraine, have been tried, Dacic remarked that everybody knows that ''Ukrainian mercenaries have participated in the crimes committed by the Croatian forces against Serb population in Croatia in the conflicts during the 1990s. Ukraine, however, unlike Serbia, has never tried and condemned those mercenaries''. Minister Dacic at the same time announced that the special envoys for the Ukrainian crisis - American Kurt Volker and Russian Vladislav Surkov - met again in Belgrade on November 13 to talk about best ways to resolve conflict in the Donbass.
