(ANSA) - BRUXELLES - The European Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and Serbian Minister for European Integration, Jadranka Joksimović have signed in Brussels a funding worth €27.4 million to support Serbian education.

The programme will help the country's educational system to be more compatible with the labor market needs and more equal by improving teachers' abilities and improving the education of the most vulnerable minorities in Serbia. Around 40.000 teachers will be trained according to the new modern training programme, and can thus provide their students with high-quality lessons.

In addition, 4000 teachers in minority languages will receive special training and all necessary textbooks for minorities will be published. This will put all students on an equal foot, offering e.g. tailor-made pedagogical support for Roma children.

700 Roma pupils will receive scholarships to reduce dropout rates and early school leaving, especially of Roma girls.
