Brussels replies to Romania, Commissioners are under EU law

After news on investigations on Timmermans and Jourova

21 February, 20:45
(ANSA) - BRUXELLES, 21 FEB - EU Commission learned yesterday via media that Romanian authorities launched criminal investigations against EU Commissioners Frans Timmermans and Vera Jourova concerning actions performed in their official capacity and exercise of their duties. "We would like to remind Romanian authorities that all EU officials are subject to the jurisdiction of the EU Court of Justice, and national authorities have no jurisdiction on those matters", EU Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said today.

The investigations reported by Romanian media would focus on the alleged falsification of the report on the 'cooperation mechanism and verification '(Cvm), which concerns the progress of Bucharest in the judicial field.

"All EU officials are also and solely covered by the protocol of privileges and immunities attached to EU Treaties, signed by all MS, including Romania", EU spokesperson added, recalling Brussels' "great concern" for the situation of the rule of law in Romania.(ANSA).
