Romania: 6% GDP lost due to skill shortage

Companies have difficulties in hiring skilled workers

17 October, 11:07
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 17 OTT - Romania, one of the EU countries most affected by emigration towards other EU members, loses every year around 6% of its gross domestic product due to the difficulties companies have in hiring skilled workers, a PwC report revealed.

"Romania loses 6% of GDP annually, by skills shortage alone," Mihai Anița of PwC Romania said, as quoted by the portal Romania Insider. "The availability of qualified staff is dependent on factors such as free movement of labor, including easing working permits requirements for non-EU countries nationals, and educational systems that provide graduates with the right qualifications," Anița added.

The issue of lack of skilled workers, provoked mostly by emigration, is even more serious in in Bulgaria, which loses 13.2% of its GDP each year due to skills shortage, while it is slightly lower in Poland (5.7%) and Hungary (5.2%), PwC said.
