Bulgaria: fence against swine fever completed

In Romania more than 700 outbreaks confirmed to date

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 29 AGO - The Bulgarian authorities have completed the construction of a 133-kilometers long metallic fence on the land border with Romania, set up to prevent the spreading in Bulgaria of the African swine fever through the passage of infected migratory animals, local media reported.

"The fence is completed" and it is currently being equipped "with repellents" to improve the "deterrent effect" on animals, said Yanko Ivanov, deputy minister of agriculture, quoted by the news agency Novinite.

Bulgaria has not registered any case of African swine fever to date, but the situation in neighboring Romania is "very worrying," Ivanov added, recalling that the biggest pig farm in Romania, located just 50 km from the Bulgarian border, was hit by the disease. (ANSA).
