(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 20 SEP - The Amber Rail Freight Corridor (Amber RFC) was formally launched in Koper, Slovenia, on Wednesday. The rail corridor, operational since last January, connects industrial centers and inter-modal terminals in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia, the Slovenian news agency Sta reported. The purpose of the corridor is to improve cross-border rail freight transport between the four countries, said Gerhard Troche, the managing director of the project.

The Amber Rail Freight Corridor is the youngest among the ten operational EU Rail Freight Corridors and the first corridor set up on the initiative of the EU Member States concerned, the official website of the project reads. According to the Amber RFC website, "Koper plays an important role for the Amber RFC, being the southern entry point of the corridor and with its expanding seaport at the shores of the Adriatic Sea an important origin and destination of many trains using the corridor."
