In CEE area unemployment still lower than at EU level

Strong decrease was registered in Croatia year-on-year

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 30 NOV - With the exception of Croatia and Latvia, all EU countries in Central- and Eastern Europe continue to have a lower unemployment rate than the EU average, new data published by Eurostat today show.

In October 2018, Eurostat said, the EU28 unemployment rate was 6.7% in October 2018, down from the 7.4% registered in October 2017.

The lowest unemployment rate in the EU (2.2%) was registered in the Czech Republic, followed by Germany (3.3%) and Hungary (3.7%). Among the EU countries in Central- and Eastern Europe with the lowest unemployment rate last month, also Poland (3.8%), Romania (4%), Austria (5.1%), Slovenia (5.2%), Bulgaria (5.4%), Estonia (5.8%), Lithuania (6.3%) and Slovakia (6.6%). The only two countries that registered and unemployment rate higher than the EU average were Latvia (6.9%) and Croatia (8.1%). Croatia, however, recorded the largest decrease in the unemployment rate at the EU level, from 10.2% in October 2017 to 8.1% in October 2018.

The highest unemployment rates in the EU were observed in Greece (18.9% in August 2018), Spain (14.8%) and Italy (10.6%). The lowest youth unemployment rate was registered in Czechia (5.2%) and Germany (6.2%), the highest in Greece (36.8% in August 2018), followed by Spain (34.9%) and Italy (32.5%).
