Poland: 2019, year of Herling, writer who escaped from gulag

Decision made by the parliament

(ANSA) - WARSAW - In Poland, 2019 will be the year of the remembrance of Gustaw Herling Grudzinski (1919 - 2000), renowned Polish writer and essayist, former prisoner of a Soviet Gulag, who in the post-war period (since 1955) had been living in Naples, where he married Lidia Croce. The parliament in Warsaw made this decision, urging the country's cultural institutions to remember Herling's life and works, in conjunction with the centenary of his birth, May 20, 2019. "His book 'Inny swiat' (A world apart) was the first of its kind in world literature giving evidence of the martyrdom of the Soviet camp prisoners, which the author experienced when he was thirty years old", the Polish MPs wrote, also recalling Herling's deep regret because a part of the European intellectuals had criticised him for years.
