Poland: Senate passed Holocaust law, Israel protests

Minister Gallant, 'a case of Shoah denial'

01 February, 13:31
(ANSA) - WARSAW, FEB 1 - The Polish Senate ruled by the conservative party Law and Justice (PIS) led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, despite opposition protests, passed the controversial law under which you can condemn up to three years in jail those who attribute co-responsibility for the Shoah to the Polish state or deny the crimes committed during the Polish war by Ukrainian nationalists. In the vote, which took place just before 2am, 57 senators voted in favour, 23 against, with 2 abstentions. To enter into force, the law has to be signed by head of state Andrzej Duda. This vote provoked a strong reaction in Israel. Israeli minister Yoav Gallant called it ''a case of Shoah denial''. ''The remembrance of 6 million Jews killed - he said on twitter, cited by media - is stronger than any law; we will protect this remembrance and we have learnt our lesson well: the ability to defend ourselves with ourselves''.
