(ANSA) - KRAKOW - ''The years when Europe was being built'' from the defeat of Caporetto (October 24, 1917) until Poland's renaissance (November 11, 1918) are the focus of a meeting sponsored by the Krakow-based Italian Cultural Institute, managed by Ugo Rufino.

The topic was discussed by Stefan Bielanski (Krakow Pedagogical University), Giovanni Cerchia (University of Molise), Enrico Landoni (University of Novedrate) and Davide Artico (University of Wroclaw), in relationtrad to the contents of the books written by Marco Patricelli and Gianni Biondillo: the essay 'The Italy of the Losses' (Laterza) and the novel 'Come sugli alberi le foglie' (Guanda), respectively. Two ways of telling World War I, trenches and soldiers' dramatic experiences, in front of an audience made up of teachers, scholars and students of Italian language (around 1,400 in Krakow) who particularly appreciated reports and speeches given by historians and writers. The event has been described as one of the most significant initiatives ever organised by the Italian Institute.

Marco Patricelli, best known in Poland for his essay on Auschwitz's volunteer Witold Pilecki (Laterza, Acqui Storia Prize in Italy and bestseller in Poland), lecturer at the famous Jagellonica University on 'Italy at war'. The historian received the Order of Honour by the Council of Ministers and the Order of the Republic of Poland by the President. In April he spoke at two meetings, about Fascism and Resistance respectively. (ANSA).
