Frontex deal with Montenegro on border management

To control migration. The final word lies with EU parliament

07 October, 20:54
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, OCTOBER 7 - The EU Commission gave green light to the cooperation agreement between Montenegro and Frontex, the European border and coast guard agency, to manage migration and crime along the EU's external borders.

Approved by the European Council last March, the agreement was signed today in Brussels by the European Commissioner for migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the Montenegrin interior minister Mevludin Nuhodzic, and Finland's interior minister, who holds the EU presidency, Maria Ohisalo.

The agreement will allow Frontex to assist Podgorica with the management of borders and migratory peaks, by carrying out joint operations and deploying some of its teams on the border between Montenegro and the EU. The final word on the entry into force of the agreement lies with the European Parliament.

A similar cooperation agreement between the EU and Albania was achieved last February in Tirana, while agreements with Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are being finalized.(ANSA).
