Montenegro: stricter import rules for used and new vehicles

Second-hand should respect at least EURO 4 standards

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOVEMBER 16 - New stricter rules for the import of vehicles started to be in force in Montenegro, local media reported.

Imported used passenger cars or freight vehicles must respect the standard EURO 4, while new vehicles must have the EURO 6, minimum standard. The measures were announced back in May and were decided to reduce the emissions and the pollution in the country, but also to reduce the fuel consumption and the safety on the roads. As in other Balkan countries, the phenomenon of importing old cars is widespread in the country and connected to the issue of pollution, as often obsolete second-hand cars from Western Europe end up in the region to be re-sold. Last year, local media reported, more than 21,000 cars were imported in Montenegro, mostly from Germany, The Netherlands and France. Of the total, around 14,000 were diesel cars. The majority of imported cars were manufactured after 2000 and respected at least the EURO 3 standard. (ANSA).
