Montenegro: journalist shot, protests in Podgorica

EU, US and Council of Europe condemned the attack

10 May, 12:05
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 10 MAG - A Montenegrin investigative journalist, Olivera Lakic, editor at the daily Vijesti, on May 8th in the evening was shot on a leg outside her home in Podgorica by unknown assailants, the latest attack against media representative in the Balkan country.

The journalist was immediately taken to a local hospital and she is not in danger of life.

Lakic is known for her investigative researches and articles about organized crime and corruption. Lakic was already targeted in another attack six years ago.

The attack sparked a protest in Podgorica yesterday, with hundreds of people demanding to the authorities to bring to justice the perpetrators and protect journalists. The general manager of Vijesti said that a total of 25 attacks were registered against the independent daily, its offices and journalists in the last years. A bomb exploded last month in front of the house of another investigative reporter in Montenegro.

The US embassy, the Council of Europe and the EU, among others, have strongly condemned the attack and asked for a swift and determined investigation.

Montenegro joined NATO last year and the country is on the path of joining the European Union. Authorities have promised to boost media freedom and rule of law before joining the EU.
