EU asks Hungary to clarify on asylum to former Macedonian PM

Spokesperson reminds that Member States must defend rule of law

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, NOV 22 - The European Commission asks for "explanations" to the Hungarian premier Viktor Orban on the alleged granting of political asylum to former Macedonian Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski, convicted of abuse of office in Skopje. The spokesperson of the EU executive, Margaritis Schinas, underlined today that "no one can escape from the rule of law, and all the Member States are committed to defending it".

"This type of decision must be explained", EU spokesperson underlined, confirming the position expressed in the last few days by EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn.

"Surprising that Hungary supports Macedonia EU membership but does not consider it safe", Hahn wrote on his Twitter account.

Gruevski was Prime Minister of Macedonia from 2006 to 2016. He was sentenced to two years in jail for abuse of power and was granted asylum in Hungary after fleeing his country last week to avoid prison. (ANSA).
