NATO: Stavridis, Macedonia will be next country to join

Former Europe commander hopes for dispute resolution with Greece

(ANSA) - BELGRADE - Macedonia will be the next country to join NATO, said American admiral James Stavridis, former commander of the NATO forces in Europe, according to whom this would be a further step towards the unification and strengthening of the Balkans.

''I hope that Greece will resolve the name dispute with Skopje, opening the door to Macedonia's accession to NATO. I think that Macedonia will join the Atlantic Alliance'', Stavridis told the Voice of America, cited by Serbian media. The last country to join NATO - in chronological order - was Montenegro, another state in the Balkan region, which became a member of the Alliance in June despite Russia's strenuous opposition.
