(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 20 JAN - Lithuania is the EU country with the highest rate of people detained in jail per 100,000 inhabitants, new data from Eurostat show.

According to the EU statistical office, in the EU in 2017 there were on average 116 prisoners per 100,000 people, the lowest rate since 2000. A rate very much above the Eu average was observed in Lithuania (232 prisoners per 100 000), followed by Czechia (209), Estonia (207), Poland (196) and Latvia (193), but also other Central- and Eastern European EU countries such as Slovakia (184) and Hungary (177) registered high rates. A significant rate of people in detention was registered also in several Western Balkan states, including Montenegro (179), Serbia (153) and North Macedonia (146). The lowest rates in 2017 were recorded in Denmark (59), Sweden (57) and Finland (56), Eurostat said, adding that in the EU on average only 5% of prisoners were women. (ANSA).
