Food: Eastern Europeans eat less fruit and vegetable

Low percentages in Latvia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APRIL 1 - A much lower number of people in Central- and Eastern Europe eat fruits and vegetables on a daily basis in comparison with the EU average, new data from Eurostat show. In 2017, the EU statistical office said, 64% of the European Union population ate fruit and vegetable on a daily basis, with a daily intake of fruit most prevalent in Italy (85% of the population) and in Portugal (81 %). In contrast, less than 50% of the population ate fruit on a daily basis in several Central- and Eastern EU countries, including Latvia (35 %), Bulgaria and Lithuania (both 37 %), Hungary (40%), Romania (42%) and Croatia (46%).

When it comes to vegetable consumption, Eurostat added, the highest consumption was registered in 2017 in Ireland and Belgium (both 84%), followed by Italy (80%), while the lowest was recorded in Hungary (30%), Romania (41%), Latvia (44%), Lithuania and Bulgaria (both 45%). (ANSA).
